cranial therapy

Many people think of the skull as one solid bone with a brain inside.

In fact, it is a complex system of individual bones fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Within the skull, the brain pulses to a continuous rhythm known as the CRI (cranial rhythmic impulse) at an approximate rate of 6-12 cycles per minute.

Adverse symptoms can appear when this rhythm is restricted, disrupted or altered.

An imbalanced cranial system commonly begins with an injury to the head; the impact being absorbed into the tissues may restrict the skull’s ability to respond freely to its natural internal rhythm.  A traumatic birth process or intrauterine constraint during pregnancy, extensive dental work, a bite imbalance or even a long-standing habit of clenching teeth (bruxing) can set up an imbalance.

Without help, it may be difficult for the body to release these restrictions by itself, adapting around this abnormal movement and causing uncomfortable side effects such as: jaw, tooth, facial, back and/or neck pain, headache, visual disturbances, hearing loss, tinnitus, sinus trouble, disturbed sleep patterns, emotional difficulties.

Cranial therapy releases restricted skull joints and their supporting tissues through a painless procedure involving gentle application of focussed pressure in order to improve emotional and physical wellbeing.

Children/Babies

An imbalanced cranial system is often observed in babies and children.

If your child experienced a difficult birth process, (especially involving forceps, episiotomy, ventouse or a caesarean section), but also in case of a very quick birth, consider this possibility.

Babies cry to communicate.  Frequent-crying babies are often labelled as ‘colicky’ or ‘irritable’.  Babies with cranial or spinal imbalances are unable to tell us where it hurts, they often have difficulty sleeping and feeding and can cry inconsolably, but appear ‘healthy’ in all other respects.  Often parents are told that the baby will ‘grow out of it’.

baby back

A common effect of cranial imbalance in babies is the condition ‘plagiocephaly’, or flattened-head syndrome.  This condition commonly develops a few weeks after birth and is exacerbated by having to sleep the baby on its back.  It is a condition effectively treatable by cranial and chiropractic techniques at Barnes Chiropractic Healthcare and adjusting the baby’s sleep posture.  Plagiocephaly is known to be a predisposing factor in development of spinal scoliosis and also learning difficulties and is therefore an important condition to work to resolve.

A child born in pain learns to adapt.  Living with imbalances and pain uses up much of the child’s ‘buffer zone’ or physiological adaptive range.  This can lead to a low tolerance of stresses, frustration, anger, low attention span and other emotional or physical dysfunctions.

If your child suffers from headaches, earaches, neck and/or back pain, plagiocephaly, torticollis, feeding difficulties, irritability, frequent digestive disorder, reflux, silent reflux, colic, allergies, hyperactivity, or lack of proper sleep, chiropractic and cranial therapy is a safe and effective form of treatment.
